Georgian rule was never established in South Ossetia - even though formally that was part of Georgia. Yes, Russians did have troops on standby - on their own territory, it must be said. They expected to possibly have to come to the aid of a population which was 90% Russian citizens.
See, this is a complex situation, but picture the following. Picture a town in Mexico that is popular with Americans - let's say, it has 50% of the population that's American citizens. And let's say the Mexican military decided to shell it with multi-barreled missile launchers. And the town is only a mile and a half long and a mile wide. Do you think the American military will just idly stand by?
These were not Russian citizens that just happened to have moved to South Ossetia. These were Georgian citizens that Russia gave Russian citizenship to. Unlike Abkhasians, the Ossetians never wanted to be part of Georgia - so much so that they fought against Georgians as far back as 1989-90, when the USSR still existed. You know Russian, I believe? I happen to think invading Iraq was an act of colossal stupidity, but I’ve yet to see concrete proof that Administration officials told the public things they knew not to be true regarding the basic reasons they gave for going to war. They clearly adopted a worse case scenario attitude and engaged in hubris and wishful thinking to a stunning degree. It might suggest that they are unfit to lead the country but those are not impeachable offenses.
As to the topic of thread. I think Shakashvili (sp?) was quite reckless and should have known he was walking into a Russian trap. I think there is a good deal of ambiguity about who fired the first shot, so to speak, but he had to know sending forces into Ossetia would trigger a Russian response. Even if the US had wanted to come to Georgia’s aid, who would it have sent? I don’t approve of Russia’s actions but the US can’t be the world’s policeman.
As for Alex Jones, he is what Lenin would have described as a “useful idiot” although I think it is a stretch to even call him useful. Most of the useful idiots in Lenin’s day actually saw the USSR as a promising beacon of a hope for a new classless society. They were idealistic but naïve.
