Or are the tangles the connections themselves? To continue your idea. Maybe some of the tangles are too messy, and problematic, but couldn't you say that any strong bond you have with someone is a knot in that web, and the tangles are where a lot of strong connections, or one very messy connection, occur? I would definitely consider our group of friends a tangle - it has never been neat and clean, but that's not a bad thing either.
Of course, I may have a different idea about this web than you do.
