Mainly concerned NJ gubernatorial race, ended giving comments about each candidate's stands/actions on some issues, previous employment, stands on contracting, property taxes, school safety, guns, abortion, health insurance, cost of prescriptions. Seemed questions about Forrester were almost "push poll" lite--or the guy's worse than I remember. I gave lots of "Unsure's" since I didn't recall incidents clearly enough. Hard being reality-based.
Wish I'd taped it.

Someone here speculated earlier that the chopper crash today in Afghanistan is due to the planning for a big "gotcha Bin Laden" moment.
I don't think so--there's no way they could catch OBL, confirm it, get him secure somewhere, and manage all the stuff they'd need to manage for something like that in such a short period of time. They're obviously going after him pretty fierce right now, but I don't think they were thinking they'd have him by tonite. Probably more of a "it'd be nice if we did, but..." kinda thing.

Bush, the boozer, is Bible-literalist because, well, because:
Genesis 19:31-38
(New International Version)
31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let's get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father."
33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.
34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, "Last night I lay with my father. Let's get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him so we can preserve our family line through our father." 35 So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went and lay with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

FBI whistleblower Rowley running for Congress
Greg Gordon, Star Tribune Washington Bureau Correspondent
June 28, 2005 ROWL0628
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Former Minneapolis FBI agent Coleen Rowley, whose public criticism of the bureau set off an uproar over the FBI's pre-Sept. 11 counterterrorism lapses, said Monday that she will run as a Democrat for the U.S. House.
Rowley plans to challenge second-term Republican Rep. John Kline in Minnesota's Second District, which stretches across the Twin Cities' western and southern suburbs and as far south as Le Sueur and Red Wing.
She said she will formally launch her campaign July 6 with a pancake breakfast for friends and supporters on the driveway of her Apple Valley home.

SAS troops were last night poised to storm into Afghanistan and capture Osama bin Laden.
Special forces have "good intelligence" the al-Qaeda boss or a senior henchman is holed up in a Taliban enclave.
Two squadrons are on stand-by waiting for the go-ahead from reconnaissance troops on the ground in Afghanistan.

....BREAKING..........
Good evening.
This is the whatever time I have spoken to you from this office, where so many decisions have been made that shaped the history of this Nation. Each time I have done so to discuss with you some matter that I believe affected the national interest.
In all the decisions I have made in my public life, I have always tried to do what was best for the Nation. Throughout the long and difficult period of IRAQgate torturegate, memogate etc, etc, etc,, I have felt it was my duty to persevere, to make every possible effort to complete the term of office to which you elected me.
In the past few days, however, it has become evident to me that I no longer have a strong enough political base in the Congress to justify continuing that effort. As long as there was such a base, I felt strongly that it was necessary to see the constitutional process through to its conclusion, that to do otherwise would be unfaithful to the spirit of that deliberately difficult process and a dangerously destabilizing precedent for the future.
But with the disappearance of that base, I now believe that the constitutional purpose has been served, and there is no longer a need for the process to be prolonged.
I would have preferred to carry through to the finish whatever the personal agony it would have involved, and my family unanimously urged me to do so. But the interest of the Nation must always come before any personal considerations.
From the discussions I have had with Congressional and other leaders, I have concluded that because of the Watergate matter I might not have the support of the Congress that I would consider necessary to back the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way the interests of the Nation would require.
I have never been a quitter. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as President, I must put the interest of America first. America needs a full-time President and a full-time Congress, particularly at this time with problems we face at home and abroad.
To continue to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication would almost totally absorb the time and attention of both the President and the Congress in a period when our entire focus should be on the great issues of peace abroad and prosperity without inflation at home.
Therefore, I shall resign the Presidency effective at noon tomorrow. (Vice President Dick will be resigning too) as President at that hour in this office...We will be heading to the Hague to face...blah blah...blah

It's a narrative. Bush's narrative that ignores the fact that WE brought the terrorists to Iraq, like nukes brought Godzilla to Japan.
Man, it sounds so much like the narratives we heard for Vietnam. Vietnamization wasn't much fun, I don't think Iraqification is going well either.

My take: they told the soldiers not to clap. That way, they can explain why no one clapped. We TOLD them not to clap.
Actually, they told them to clap wildly at the end or at some predetermined line. So the spin will be that they TOLD the soldiers NOT to clap, but they were so overcome with Lame Duckie's great rhetoric, that they simply burst into spontaneous applause.

Chinook copter shot down in Afghanistan.
Rescuers try to reach downed helicopter
Aircraft carried about 16 troops over Afghanistan, officials say
Tuesday, June 28, 2005; Posted: 7:42 p.m. EDT (23:42 GMT)
-- Rescuers were battling darkness to reach eastern Afghanistan's Hindu Kush mountains, where a U.S. military helicopter carrying more than a dozen troops went down Tuesday.
The area west of Asadabad, near the Pakistan border, is known for having snow-covered peaks rising as high as 7,000 feet.
The doomed MH-47, a variant of the Army's twin-rotor Chinook transport used by special operations troops, was carrying about 16 military personnel onboard, U.S. military officials said.
Military sources tell CNN an emergency beacon went off when the aircraft went down.
The mission was to bring in reinforcements "in support of U.S. forces currently conducting counter-terrorism operations," the Coalition Press Information Center of the Combined Forces Command in Kabul said in a written statement.

As for these Iraqi police forces the Chimp keeps talking about, if people believe that having a U.S. backed police force is going to restore peace to that country, I suggest they check out the history of Northern Ireland's RUC, just to get an idea of how well that will work out.

Gosh. It’s all so clear now. Up until now the complexity of the whole situation had me lost in a fog. Now I understand. He made it all so simple. If only someone had used those words before. What a smart President. I’m especially glad those young German soldiers were there to hear the whole thing. Now they can go home and explain everything to Europeans and they will stop hating us so much. Wow. The clarity.

Watching the BTK killer tell of his horrors
I thought to myself, where have I seen such coldness before
Then I saw our fearless leader on TV… ding ding match
Apparently, the American People only respond if you give the criminal a nickname
I have decided to call bush President LTK
President LIE TORTURE KILL
President LTK has LIEd to the American people about war
President LTK has authorized/condoned TORTURE
President LTK has KILLed our Troops with an illegal war
President LTK is not remorseful
President LTK used OUR Troops tonight as props to pathetically regain poll numbers
President LTK will continue on with his same destructive path per his speech
President LTK’s crimes are horrific
The American public is horrified over BTK crimes
The American public wants BTK locked up forever
Yet
The American public refuses to be horrified over president LTK crimes
The American public allows president LTK to remain on his destructive course
After tonight’s speech…
NO to your LIES! president LTK
NO to your TORTURE! president LTK
NO to your KILLing! president LTK
The blood that has been spilled is on your hands president LTK
It is time the American People hold you and your administration accountable
A frog march to The Hague is the only way the American People can repent for your sins

Had to get up and look close to confirm.
Regarding the polite clapping, those soldiers would have clapped no matter who the commander in chief was. They're the 15,000 of the most elite, motivated, charged up soldiers in the Army, which has about 500,000 on active duty. Don't read too much into how they reacted to the president... there is nothing to read there. And they are not a "cross-section" of the soldiers currently serving.

I think it is contemptible that no single Democrat can get angry. Not Howard Dean blood-curdling scream angry but just ticked off about a country whose leadership lies routinely and doesn't do the basics like holding underperformers accountable.
Wolfowitz who advised us into this calamity gets a promotion. Incomptency in a Skirt, aka Condi Rice, gets a promotion. Don "Failure is the Ultimate Turn-on" Rumsfeld still has a job. Nuf said.
The Democrats waiver and twist, responding to the latest news rather than finding a weakness and exploiting it. Every day they need to demand a high level resignation from Bush's Cabinet. Let the Republicans know that no amount of rhetoric and flag-waving sends a stronger message that Iraq must be set right than firing Rumsfeld. Come on!

What we need to hear is Lieberman's take on things. Him being "the most honest and sincere member of our caucus" (see TPM cafe). Joshua Micha Marshall (and how self-absorbed do you have to be to run around calling yourself by all three names)? has already started spinning for the centrists, I'm sure he'll have Lieberman & Biden's soundbites up in .avi shortly.
The democratic 'centrists' (on Iraq) aren't in the center of anything. That's just linguistic cover for taking the opponents' position. They're right-wing enablers of Rummy and gang, all dressed up in democratic clothes.

Hey, falangist.
Do you know where the term "fifth column" comes from?
Do you know that one of the writers who helped put it into the popular language was also the guy who wrote that "fascism is a lie told by bullies"? Who also fought fascists?
Do you know that it was coined in a war waged by republic smashers like you who bombed freedom and human rights into the dust in places like Guernica?
Do you know that in that war, real liberals--men like George Orwell--went and got shot in the throat fighting to stop republic-smashing falangists like you? While falangists like your all-American hero Charles Lindbergh was over in Germany kissing Hitler's ass?
You and your gang don't get to smash this republic, musclehead.

"WASHINGTON, Jan. 3, 2003 – There was no mistaking that America's soldiers are firmly behind their commander in chief during a presidential visit to the Army's Fort Hood, Texas, today.
The troops there interrupted President Bush's short speech no less than 24 times with that unique Army seal of approval -- "Hooah!"
Either the 82nd was told to cool it with the "Hooahs" or the 82nd didn't hear much to "Hooah" about from Bushie.

I gotta call bullshit on the poster who said don't read into the soldiers' reactions.
Everything with BushCo is staged, for the maximum possible positive effect. And tonight, I definitely saw the camera catch one soldier mouth "Yeah, right," after Bush said something. And I saw one older guy tell a younger one to sit up straighter.

The following is the SCLM in action.
It is a transcription (DVR in the house) and accurate, there may be some misspelling and parenthitic commentary, but I trust it will be backed up by the official record.
B Williams -- "Senator Warner, when you talk about an exit strategery, does that make you cringe, or do you feel the time might be appropriate, fairly soon, to talk about a US exit strategery in Iraq"
Sen Warner -- "No I think the ca(have no idea) of the president and most of us are really aren't talking about an exit strategery, because that strategy can't be defined. The goals have been outlined, the president said again tonight (no shit), it's to stand up the iraqi militarey and to strengthen the resolve of the political process to bring in their new government, and back here at home, if I may say Brian, I think particularly in the congress, we've to be as bi partisan as we can and stop talking about quagmires, and stop talking about how maybe the conservatives are more Patriotic than the liberals, that message is getting back to the troops that this dissention here at home, and as our generals testified before the armed services committe last week, they have to stop and reaassure their own troops, that back home is "with 'em, so we've got to back up the president and back up the Troops and stay the course."
BDub -- " So Senator Biden, taking Senator Warner's point, how does a Democrat, who, uh, uh, objects to the effort, at least the way the effort is being executed, uh, go against the war, uh, while not hurting the troops in the field."
Biden, answers but not worth transcription.

I think the speech was great. It outlined why we're there....but it didn't really tell why....except that what it really is is the Vietnam domino argument in reverse.
In other words, by establishing democracy in Iraq, we'll be establishing a domino effect on the Middle East which will become democratic.
Funny....the domino effect didn't happen in Southeast Asia. Vietnam is communist and that's about it except that the U.S. is its biggest trading partner.

The problem is that the centrists are enabling the radical right rather than moderating their effects.
The problem our troops have right now is NOT dissension at home. It's the lack of dissension at home. If Republican House and Senate members who complain as talking heads went back to the House and Senate and started to vote for the soldiers instead of lockstepping it behind Furious George and Unka Karl, speaker of outrageous lies, the US and the soldiers would be better off and a happier place.

The only things I would have wanted to hear him say anyway are: "I apologize to the world community for the torture that has been inflicted on those being held by American forces on my watch. All of the foreign prisoners in U.S. custody will be afforded a trial within the U.S. legal system, effective immediately. We've made some mistakes in veering from the rule of law and some of the international treaties to which we are party. I intend to make amends and correct the policies that have led to these situations and incidents." Or, "I am hereby resigning my position as President of the United States."
So yeah, I don't feel I missed much.
