Gravatar They are on to you. They know you do this in your free time.

Gravatar It's because they want to limit access. They know you don't want to do this research during the day, at work, where it can be tracked, allowing whistleblowers and "troublemakers" to be punished. Off the job, no access at all--the site is closed.

Everybody should immediately write to their members of Congress and demand that 24-hour web access be reinstated.

Gravatar This is not the only "cost-saving " measure they've implemented that just happens to make it more difficult to access inspection information. I kept getting an error message that would not allow me to look up inspection records. An OSHA staff person explained that you now have to have cookies enabled so that they can limit access by people who spend too many hours on the OSHA site. (?)(!)

Gravatar I was trying to demonstrate the website to my occupational health class when I got the message that it was closed. I sent an e-mail to the webmaster asking why would a web-based service need to close at night. They got back to me today (after checking with supervisors) and they told that this was a cost-cutting measure. When I questioned how it saved money, it seems that they pay an outside contractor to host the webserver, and they get paid based on the number of times the website gets accessed: so the more successful the program, the more it costs, and then they need to cut it back. It is interesting that the times that they cut it back are the times when workers are most likely to access it. They said that they are hoping to solve the budget problem and get it back up 24 hours a day.
