When I was a young boy, trying to understand myself and the feelings I had for other boys, I picked up a mailing my step mother had laying around the house from the "Moral Majority". For years I was tortured by what I read about myself.

I knew I was a good person but for years struggled with thoughts that this important man and the many who listened to what he said somehow knew I was evil, wretched, would no less than cause the downfall of my country and likely burn in hill.

Margaret, earlier I said I got to tell a dear friend of mine his one depressing thing hanging over his head is now lifted. My friend has been HIV+ for like 17 years, upon finding out his family, devoted fatwell supporters, disowned him. My family sort of adopted him. So in 1969, in Wisconsin, I tuned into his Baptist Liberty “Church” on a Sunday, bored, in High School, as we did not have cable back then. Just Broadcast. And I learned what televangelism was.

All we had were Sister Mary’s Masses for Shut-Ins, and after her morning sermon Jerry Falwell would appear.

Even back then, as a young, impressionable teenager, I had never seen such Hate. He used his pulpit to call MLK and Negroes “communists.”

He used his pulpit of God to tell me my Mother was Evil for working outside the Home. He NEVER stopped talking about how Evil, we, as a Protestant family, were EVIL.

The Reverend sure did a great speech on why his viewers should support his “college,” and those impressionable people, who were so searching for The Word of God, got suckered into his money-making machine.

Dear RightDem and other haters of the Christian Faith:

First of all, stop your insanity and hatred already! Its unbecoming of those whom claim to be followers of Jesus Christ. Either than or many of you so called “Chrostians” are intellectually challenged when it comes to comprehending what the Bible says as opposed to how you choose to see it in its written form.

Secondly, to all “Christians” out there---stop cherry picking the Chapter and Verses which fits your narrow political views and other social diseases such as misogyny, sexism, homophobia, racism, religious intolerance of faiths that do not coincide with the brainwashing one gets from the likes of Falwell, and other prejudices not mentioned here.

According to the Bible slavery is not a sin either and even condoned and practiced for years by the same itenerant preachers in America that can be traced to Falwell and Robertson and the white preachers who opposed the civil rights movement of Martin Luther, King, Jr.

Falwell and his ilk certainly looked at blacks as being "sinners" during the civil rights era and started white religious schools in opposition to the U.S. Supreme Court decision of Brown vs. Board of Eduucation, in 1954. So, while "being black is not a sin" it certainly had that same effect when it came to blacks by these same white preachers that Falwell and Robertson can be traced back to, and of whom King pointed at during his "Letter from Birmingham Jail." And, yes, blacks were killed for being black and lynched in places like Lynchburg, Virginia of where Falwell is from.

So spare me your hollow justifications for the likes of Falwell and your selective reading of the Bible.

Falwell must have agreed with slavery too. The Bible condones slavery or did RightDem forget to cherry pick that passage out of the Bible as well. Falwell the proud segregatonist no doubt had forefathers like John McCain who owned slaves.

McCain came from a family of slaveowners.

Falwell was a fan and friend of the likes of George Wallace, Lester Maddox, and other segregationists. Falwell criticized Martin Luther, Jr. and the civil rights movement as well.

Falwell too his racism to the hating of gays and lesbians. So, while you Falwell apologists "justify his actions" just remember your man made his life out of hating one group or another and that Rev. Martin Luther King was referring to the white preachers like Falwell, who opposed racial equality and equal rights in his "Letter from the Birminhham Jail."

Enough said.
Folks, just remember this:

Jerry Falwell, in short, had utter hatred for his fellow man. He was a proud segregationist in the 1950's and 1960's and who started his first religious school after the Brown versus Board of Education decision demanding racial integration. Falwell's hatred of the Federal Government began not with anti-gay or anti-women hatred but racism which easily led to hatred of single mothers and later gays who had AIDS.

Falwell switched very quickly after looking at the political winds yet needing a group to still hate and loathe by changing his foucus on his "racism" to the hating of gays and lesbians, and those suffering with AIDS.

Falwell did not always empathize with others when they died or passed away, but was mean and caustic instead, which hardly a trait consistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Falwell led fundraising campaigns along with Pat Robrtson directed at gays, lesbians, feminists, and single mothers with children.

Falwell, in fact, had utter contempt for equal rights of women in America and led the fight to defeat the Equal Rights Amendment, (ERA), and was the leader in the present day "religious right" movvement.

Falwell along with Pat Robertson have advocated for more and not less violence in the Middle East and have had violent contempt for gays and lesbians and single mothers here in America. Falwell was a rabble rouser for the Israeli government to use as much violence as necessary against the Palestinians and was never one to advocate for peace. Falwell bashed Desmond Tutu and he along with Robertson were rabid supporters of apartheid in South Africa. Thanks to Mr. Falwell’s “religious leadership” people died of AIDS as he (Falwell) justified the deaths due to AIDS as a result of “lifestyle choice.”

I cannot judge Jerry Falwell and will not on this day either. Falwell never had the right to judge others and he led the charge to divide America into one of a secular versus a religious fundamentalist one and I never went along with that and do not today, either.

I do know that these evangelical preachers have made millions of money by taking it from hard working people to promise them things they cannot promise in reality.

No, Falwell was hardly not empathetic to gays who died of AIDS and was an enemy of feminists, single mothers, the poor, women in general, and anyone who did not walk the way he and the likes of Pat Robertson, Billy Graham, and James Dobson preach to this day. Falwell used poor people's plight to manipulate them into giving to the evangelical movement. The evangelical movement too often tells the poor they are in that situation because they lack the "grace" of Jesus which is one of their big lies that the media does not report on.

The legacy of Falwell will be leading the anti-gay movment in America and pointing fingers of those whom had the AIDS virus. Falwell pointed to those who were suffering with AIDS to their death seem like felons and criminals rather than human beings. This is what I will always remember about Mr. Falwell above and beyond anything else he may have done "worthy." Falwell was a hater and did not walk the talk that Jesus did--as in the Sermon on the Mount!!

Do people realize that Franklin Graham and many "religious right" leaders have attempted to spread the "Christian word" to those of the Islamic faith in Iraq? Yes, indeed and the media have yet to report on this issue and how its lead to violence in Iraq. Do a Google Search and you will find information on the topic.

The likes of Falwell and his ilk have convinced their followers that the Middle East conflict is one being waged for "God" and they are doing the work of the Lord in killing those whom practice the "evil faith of Islam." Yes, Falwell was essentially an enemy of HUMANITY unless one believed exactly the way he did. Falwell indeed saw gays and lesbians and feminists-women as less than because he cheered those whom died of AIDS and led the fight against the Equal Rights Amendment.

Falwell, in effect, preached VIOLENCE and not PEACE.

Falwell defies anything I have ever read of which Jesus taught or preached when it came to mercy on the human soul. Falwell and his ilk are the ones whom still lack the grace of God and always will until they stop justifying hatred, death, slaughter, wars, and contempt for their fellows.

Falwell was truly a despicable bag of stinking excrement and although I know he will be extolled to the skies by the GOP candidates, he will be remembered as one of the most abominable Americans of all time. He had no qualms about making statements which incited the fundies against gays, feminists, abortionists, etc., and his Telly Tubby remark was perhaps his queerest one. He also blamed the aforementioned groups for 9/11. Could anything have been more off the wall? I am glad that his voice has been silenced and although I know there will soon be a successor, probably just as virulent and obnoxious, I am glad that I will no longer see his puffy face which so often appeared on programs like Geraldo Rivera, (another great loser). I can imagine how the Fox News group will be in deep mourning and will milk his death for all it's worth.

My point is, how can we condemn him for his hateful words when we're stooping to the same tone -- on the day of his death, no less? It's hypocrisy. Many of the posts on these boards -- and John Aravosis's blog comments today -- sound immature and, frankly, unhinged. I believe the statement put out by the HRC set the right tone --respectful and humane, yet fully recognizant of Falwell's bitter legacy. There's strength in maintaining composure and staying on the high road while battling the forces of hate.

Kudos to Jeff for speaking with rationality and dignity. To anyone on here claiming to be a Christian and as a progressive who is a Christian, I can't disobey Christ's command to forgive and love all people. He didn't say just love people who are nice or people who you agree with. The duty is to love all, forgive all, without exception. Just because I disagree with Falwell's politics or actions do not mean I choose to be corrupted by vile hatred or animus against him as a person. I find it hard to stand in the trenches politically with people who are saying inhumane and vicious things about another human being's death, no matter how much we agree on labor issues, gay rights, the poor, and the Iraqi war. Anyone claiming to be a Christian must resist any temptation to hate others and guard against justifications for such animus.
