Wake Up people. Please go read the extent to which Ford Motor Company supports GLBT employees in its policies and fosters all types of diversity.

THIS IS NOT A COMPANY THAT SHOULD BE BEAT UP FOR THIER POLICIES.

They are far above in supporting diversity initiatives of all types and have one of the best domestic partner benefit programs of any major company. They also have a significant amount of openly gay managers and executives who can back this up.

Unfortunately, they are also a business under tremendous competitive pressure. If this were in response to the bozos at AFA, they would have cut Volvo advertising in these same publications also (which they actually increased).

Businesses like Verizon can stop paying pensions, but there's no free lunch for either the business or society.

Notwithstanding the lucky people who have an inheritance, people survive day-to-day with the income from their WORK. The income from their work comes either in the weekly paycheck or when they're old and receive a pension or 401-K or IRA.

An NBC new analyst said we need to be competitive with other countries. But if you check out industrialized countries, they all tend to treat their population with dignity and humanity. By cutting pensions in America, without raising wages, you push the cost of old age on society and all taxpayers, or you let the old live without dignity even though they may have worked hard, played by the rules and saved.

Globilization is not the answer; its the problem.

The poorly-named American Family Association seems to announce a new boycott at least once a month. Usually the targeted company more or less ignores the silly little religious right group, nothing happens, and the AFA moves on to its next victim. Unfortunately, Ford seems confused about how this is supposed to go.

The AFA launched a nine-year boycott of Disney, for example, during which time none of the group's demands were met and the company enjoyed a surge in profits. The AFA also launched boycotts against Crest toothpaste, Volkswagen, Tide detergent, Clorox bleach, Pampers, MTV, Abercrombie & Fitch, K-Mart, Burger King, the Carl's Jr. hamburger chain, Kraft Foods, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Old Navy stores, NutriSystem, and American Airlines. Late last year, the AFA went after the movie "Shark Tale," because the group believed the movie was designed to brainwash children into accepting gay rights. Then, it was American Girl dolls. Then it was Target for its lack of the word "Christmas" in its advertising. The whole thing is pretty embarrassing, but the AFA just keeps doing it.

So, in June, when the AFA went after Ford Motor Company for its support of the "homosexual agenda," the company was supposed to just blow it off. Instead, it's doing what the AFA demands.

After a threatened boycott from a conservative religious organization, the Ford Motor Company has said it will cut back on advertising in gay-oriented publications.

The group, the American Family Association, called for the boycott in May because of what it said was the company's "track record for supporting the homosexual agenda."

After a meeting last week between Ford executives and members of the group, the company said that its Jaguar and Land Rover brands would no longer be advertised in gay publications.

Ford representatives said the move was part of a cost-cutting measure, but Aravosis knows better.

Ford ought to be embarrassed by the entire mess. Caving to a fringe group like this is ridiculous.

There are two obvious weaknesses to your argument:
A) No one but no one would be apologizing fro Ford if the were kowtowing to the KKKlan who say identical things about blacks, jews et al that the AFA website clearly and unequivically says about the LGBT community.

My best friend's brother in law works at Ford-- on the assembly line, making a decent living for him and his family to live in a gated suburban community-- he his wife are as Focused on the Family fundies as anybody, and I'll bet they're card carrying members of this Wildmon group, as well. I sent an email to him to ask him what he thinks of this mess. No reply yet-- and I'm not holding my breath.

PS: I think this is really bizarre, but his wife teaches yoga at their big-box church, but they're not allowed to call it "yoga" because it's from a non-christian religion.

But seriously, I found Americablog a few months ago quite by accident. I can't survive a day without checking in a reading the posts. I love the posters here, the dialog, and thanks John for all of your hard work! Now...if I had some $$$, I'd donate to the cause.

The GLBT groups need to organize and take apart the right-wing fundie agenda line by line, piece by piece in a measured way. We need to make clear arguments and change the language that's used. I can't tell you how many times I run across fundies who spout the sound bites they hear on Fox. We HAVE to take control of the debate NOW. I'm all for the protesting the streets ala ACT-UP, but I only want to bring out the screaming angry lesbian side of me when I absolutely need it. ;)

My mom was all set to buy a Jaguar from a local dealer today. She had been there about 4 times looking at the car, etc... She was scheduled to meet with a salesperson today to sign the contracts, everything had been worked out over the last week. Thank God I was able to talk to her today. She went into to the dealship and explained exactly why she was backing out of her purchase. The salesperson was stunned that Ford corporate would cow-tow to the Klan -- that's what he called AFA! He said he didn't know if he could keep working for a company that bowed to a known hate-group. My mom said he looked pissed and quite green around the gills.

Fuck Ford, we know where they stand now. No apology, no reversal is required -- what is required is that we hound this infamous anti-Jew, anti-gay company out of existence entirely -- they don't deserve to exist amongst decent people.

Can I please bring up the Supremes case about Recruiters on campus?

At least listening on PBS News Hour I was struck that - IMHO - they are arguing the wrong arguments.

(1) Key - to me - is that the provision that FORCES schools to allow recruiters on campus or lose Fed. funding has NOTHING to do with the GOALS of the funding.

Example: Although the case is about colleges, the same applies to High Schools. High Schools receive Fed. funds for a variety of programs - special education IDEA funding is one. What does meeting the needs of students with disabilities have to do with meeting the needs of the military for cannon fodder?

Fed. funds are allocated to accomplish certain goals - educating disabled kids, educating poor kids, etc. If they can tie a totally unrelated provision - access to military recruiters - to receipt of ALL fed. funds, what is to keep them from making OTHER unrelated preconditions for receipt of Fed. funds? Maybe they want to promote irradiated beef or genetically modified foods in school lunches - accept them or give up fed. funds. Maybe they want to teach Intelligent Design - or else! Maybe they want to prohibit mention of condoms or other forms of birth control. Maybe they want to allow random drug testing. Maybe they want to prohibit any speech or action that is against Administration goals and policies. You have a choice - accept the condition or lose ALL funding, no matter what the goals of the funding were.

(2) Second - the implication is that the the MILITARY gets to control how OUR tax dollars are used to support the education of OUR children. What if they decide that all students must enroll in ROTC programs - or else give up all Fed. funds?

(3) A VOLUNTEER military implies free will. If you FORCE access to young people, and allow deceptive advertising to cajole people to sign a contract that one party can change at will and the other party cannot get out of, that is not a VOLUNTARY militray. It is coerced forced labor in support of corporate greed.
