I think that the 'intimacy' factor is bang on.

There is a definite telepathy between several friends who have long-standing partners - almost as if they are sub-consciously second-guessing the other's needs.

And, of course, Mrs.D. and I no longer need to speak - one glance and I'm at the sink, with drying-up towel in hand. {8¬)
