Iain J Coleman:
I'm pretty sceptical about the "politicians won't allow the building of a new airport" line. I suspect it would be closer to the truth to say that the people living in the area where this hypothetical airport might be built are unwilling to have an airport built there. The way to get round this problem is to persuade those people to change their minds.
Another way round it would be to give the state the power to build airports wherever it wishes, with no regard for any individuals who might be in the way. I doubt many libertarians (or liberals) would be terribly keen on that solution, mind you.

David Farrer:
Glasgow and Edinburgh politicians rarely co-operate, even if the locals agree. Of course, I agree that it should be left to the market but BAA was privatised as a package including both GLA and EDI.
The proposed Peel takeover of Glasgow would happen only if BAA wanted to sell but I think that such a (voluntary) deal would be good for our air services.
