I don’t know how I missed it, but the fact is that I read you brilliant essay only today. And then I read it again and some more. Not because it demands an extra exertion to understand - as it is wonderfully articulate and accessible, but because it is great pleasure to read something, which so finely expresses and confirms one’s own feelings and intuitions about the Modern Age.

I have mentioned your essay to my old uncle who not knowing English read Burke in French and have urged me many times to read him. He, besides being an admirer of Burke, will turn 85 next Wednesday and I thought giving him a Polish translation of your essay for birthday present. He will be delighted. I hope this is OK with you. Is it?

Ah, lest you think I am ungenerous, I will, of course, add a bottle of fine vodka to the present. I know he will enjoy both parts. Let’s hope not in unison.
