One of the strengths of the Electoral College, as originally envisioned, was that it was possible for the College to elect a President of the United States who didn't want the job. That's how it actually worked with Washington, but never since. What went wrong?

Well, to say that something "went wrong" one first has to find someone who didn't want the job. And, with the remarkable exception of G. Washington, that has never happened. So perhaps the pessimism is a bit premature...

What I wanted to say is that if an absence of those who "don't want the job" is the measure of "something gone wrong" then, as I personally know a number of Americans who don't want the job, nothing has changed since Washington. Except perhaps that the College is no more interested in people who are not interested.
