What exactly do you think Jesus was trying to say in Matthew 26:11? Because you site it often as cover for the moral rectitude of ignoring poverty. I'm sure you're aware of the many, many more instances where Jesus says that it is a moral obligation to fight poverty (and some that suggest that wealth itself is indicative of moral failing, but we'll leave that alone).
What Matthew 26:11 says to me is that in that instance a woman's act of kindness/honoring Jesus was more important than the money that she speant (which the disciples complained should have been speant on the poor). Jesus was saying two things, 1, realize I will be gone soon and 2, savor the time when I'm here. Indifference to poverty is not the message.

Point me to where I have ever counseled indifference to poverty. Because if I ever did counsel such madness, I would deserve a rebuke.

Here is, I believe, the most direct comment I have made in writing about the weath and poverty and the Bible:

Christ himself marvels at the shriveling effect of wealth on the soul: "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!" (Mark 10:23) Those words, I confess, lead me to tremble for our age.

As I read Matthew 26, Christ might as well have said the rich you will always have with you. One need not be rich to have your soul poisoned by avarice; and there is no inherent holiness in poverty. The point Christ is making (in addition to what you have said about not being around much longer) is about the limitations imposed on us by the world. We cannot eradicate poverty; nor can we eradicate the callousness of the irresponsible rich.

My point, in the context of this post, is that Mr. Novak is being reckless, almost to the point of impiety, in his dismissal of Christ's jarring admonition.

Well I see the obvious error in trying to directly refute a quote from Jesus, and I'm not going to pose as a Novak fan, but this (indifference, acceptance)seems to be the implication.

If we don't struggle to overcome poverty what do we do? Is your beef with the term "eradicate", or just the rhetorical tweaking of the Bible verse?
