Too bad she'll never read your essay, and if she did, would not understand it. The problem here is that no one is willing to stand up and shame her into gratitude for the privilege she enjoys. Her coach could tell her that if she turns her back on the flag again, she won't be playing. If she does it again, she's off the team. If I had done that in high school, my coach would have thrown me across the locker room, with my parents' approval.

I have a hard time really getting anger with her: she was probably raised on the sour milk of inviolable "rights" and self-contempt for the civilization which makes talk of such rights even possible.
