Interesting. I guess I'm naive, but I never realized the reason people went to conferences was to behave like groupies and "hang with the band."
I thought they went to see new trends and learn. On the other hand, I've never attended a computer conference where I wasn't speaking and I've never felt the need to meet people to feel important. Fascinating.
I guess this explains why these conferences have all these boring speakers who are executives from big companies who are just giving the same old sales pitch. People put up with the same old garbage just to get a chance to meet the speaker. Very weird.
Since I don't have a clue about this phenomenon, I'd like more details -- this would make a really good story: "Why people really attend trade shows."

Good idea. I'll think about it and get back to you -- gotta get out and have a life for the rest of the day.
The reason people go to a Comdex-style show is quite a bit different from the reason people go to a VSConnections-style show, though.

One thing I'll say before I leave. The reason I was sent to Comdex was to meet with the press and to sell product. In my case, the "VIPs" were execs who could buy lots of product.

Oh, please. Meckler gets it plenty. His weblog has a personal voice and isn't filled with marketing speak. The topics he's discussing are about the company, so naturally he links to it.
Considering he's only put up a handful of posts, I think it's ridiculous to criticize him for not getting it. There are great weblogs that almost never link to anything, and I'm impressed that he's had the guts to give it a try.
