When you have an objective newspaper trying to cover ALL sides equally, having a reporter do a blog that is loaded with opinion TAKES that reporter out of the realm OF reporter. That is the conflict. It's when the public start seeing the slant, and no matter which way you go, a good percentage will be on the other side. If he was an OPINION columnist, then yah, but he is a reporter.

The same thing that keeps reporters barred from accepting gifts, keeps them from wading into heavy opinion. If they want to be opinion, well fine, get on the papers Editorial Board. There is supposed to be (at least in theory) this objective, fair representation. I merely look at this as an Reporter/Editor, reaching out for opinional areas via a Blog. And to the newspaper, if one remains a reporter, that can be thought of as an conflict of interest. If that reporter wasn’t aware of the obvious, then he is even less of a journalist. Look at Gillmor, will be cover say ‘Blogs’ or ‘Emerging Tech’ objectively? No, as he is passionate on one side and writing a book with a slant. If Denis Horgan wants to move from the realm of Asst. Section Editor in the News Dept, and wade on over to the Editorial Board, then a Blog, perhaps, would be more acceptable. But that’s up to the Hartford Courant. A paper, btw, which has a rich place in American history.

Days and nights are totally owned by the employer? You bet your life they are. Most employers list in their handbooks that outside employment is not allowed, per conflict of interests and the fact that juggling two jobs can eventually impact one’s performance in the other. And most companies also have ‘morality clauses’ in contracts. Recall, oh say, Bob Greene? That is part of the contract you enter into. Against labor laws? Well, just toss out the whole of Employment Contract Law too and most States still hold to the “at will” doctrine. Proving just cause, is always subject to interpretation and legality. If everything was so ‘cut and dry’ then there would be no need for Labor Unions and Third Party Mediation. Gillmor's assertation that you can just toss some ‘State Labor Section’ on the wall, belies, extreme naivety.

Gravatar > When you have an objective newspaper trying to cover ALL sides equally

Since none of the organizations in question are "objective newspapers", the rest of the sentence doesn't apply.

If papers have an objection along these lines, it's that the reporter isn't pushing the company line in a situation where the public might get confused.

Gravatar Except that in this case we have a former columnist, someone who was paid to write opinion, who now is the paper's travel editor. He's not covering city hall, he's writing about places other than Hartford, in fact. So it troubles me that the paper would consider his writings a threat. Yes, newspapers have very good reasons for limiting the outside work that their employees do. But this sort of thing isn't going to go away, and stamping out each person's site like it's a virus is not a long-term solution. Editors need to consider a better way to deal with this issue and not just wield a big stick.

Gravatar Since there are no “objective newspapers”, the rest doesn't apply? Interesting logic. Because there are hypocrites , truth doesn’t apply? No one is objective, everyone is an advocate, there is no such thing as libel? Everything is relative, there never can be a real story? I do not agree. Truth is truth.

And true, bias is normal and a natural impluse, no more so than in the 1790’s, when Benjamin Bache, grandson of Benjamin Franklin, and Editor of the American Aurora, caused so much contention as to get the Federalists to pass the free-speech limiting Sedition Acts of 1798. Howeever modern newspapers try and maintain a balance of fairness, whether they succeed is open to continual questioning, but fairness is the policy of most newspapers.

Consider his writings a threat? They don’t have to, they just have to consider it an impediment to his current job. And reporters change beats quite often, just because he is not covering City Hall (or something similar) now, doesn’t mean he won’t in the future; sure would limit his future employability. The loopholes per ‘if he covers this’ then ‘he can only write about that’, opens up a whole set of other problems, that I don’t think any newspaper wishes to go down. Big stick or not, it did deal with it.

Blogs are raw, unedited, narrowcast, self-aggrandizing, groupthink’ed, pure social, and full of meaningless personal details...but they are what they are. Having representives of a newspaper engaging in this sort of chaotic behavior, opens the newspaper up to libel and a whole host of other factors. If he is so keen on Blogging, find a newspaper that allows for such. This ‘Big J’ verus ‘Blogs’ is so overwrought, Blogs are just chatter, its talk radio. You can yappy yap all day long, or you can get some work done. Journalism is WORK.

Chris,

You had me until the very end. Agreed. 90% of blogging +is+ "yappy yap" stuff, but the problem is, there's 10% of the time when it's real journalism.
