Gravatar A better search term might be "cocktail Seattle"

Is Robert Hess's site really a weblog? I can't tell how often that front page is updated. "As you may have noticed, I don't update my site on any sort of a regular basis."

Gravatar There's a weblogish component to it. And, now that I've pointed to it, is it marked as a weblog? That's the whole problem with removing weblogs from the index. Some ARE authoritative.

Gravatar Without someone inventing the Semantic Web or some centralized ranking system instead of Google using their [well-worn] incoming links hack I don't see how they can decide who is an "authoritative blogger" and who isn't. Especially since the very term is highly subjective.

I really hope they find a way to remove bloggers from their index. Hopefully this will reduce a lot of the swollen headed preening that has started to dominate a number of the more popular blogs.

Heh. Like mine?

Gravatar Hmmm, it seems to me that if Google could recognize the boundaries of an entry, then it could use some heuristics (amount of text in the entry, ratio of link text to total text, ...) to distinguish between a link-to and original content. They could then use link-to entries for page rank and either push the entry down in search results or display the entry to indicate the link tree to some arbitrary depth (as they show two hits from the same site).

Gravatar Pagerank (the overall global relevance of a unique URL) is something that Google uses as part of it's calculation of the relative ranking of a result set, but it is not the only measure, otherwise highly linked-to sites such as weblogs would be authoritative for *everything* including terms that are only mentioned in passing in a singler post, regardless of it's particular relevance to a specific query.

While there is some of that going on (because PageRank is a factro in result ranking), Google obviously does a lot more to calculate more specific relevance for queries that simply pageranking the URLs that mention a search term.

In particular, if the link text pointing to the URL in question contains the search terms, seems to push the URL higher in the relevance rankings for that term.

Google may also be recalculating Pagerank within the set of pages that contain the search terms.

All this indicates that the way to improve the authoritativeness of Google search results is to point to resources you consider authoritative, and to use a term that describes the search you would consider it authoritative for in the link text.

However, unlike the Googlebombing craze that swept through weblogs a while back, the resource at the URL you point to must alsio agree that it is authoritative for the term (by mentioning it in the text, and ideally in the title and a headline).

Problem solved (at least over the long term).

Gravatar ha! Yes, Drinkboy has a weblog (but I didn't find a link to it from drinkboy.com).
