I think MS (and other big corporations) is slow in several areas because of this, they have to do an all-or-nothing aproach, they have to new things very well or not do them at all.

I don't think this is bad, because I know what to expect when they do it.

I think that the infrastructure point that she was making about the microsoft.com site has to do with how the backend of the site is structured and how the data in the database is related to each other. I watched a video where Tim Ewald was talking about trying to get the microsoft.com site to learn new tricks, and he said that it wasn't easy. Look him up, he'll give you the low down...

One correction and one comment. I don't own all the sites under /windows, I own the Windows home page and a few sites underneath. The bulk of the sites are owned by site managers focusing on each major product area.
So, that said, my focus is a lot around coordinating headline coverage across home pages within the Windows sites and across all the Microsoft home pages.
I don't think that the infrastructure is like an old dog that can't learn new tricks, it's like a federation of many many dogs, all needing to pull together at the same time in order to prevent chaos, to mix metaphors.
The idea of RSS feeds is clearly wise, to use yet another overused expression, the devil is in the details. I think your idea of a pilot makes total sense.

There might be more SPOT users if the MSN Direct coverage pages knew the difference between Portland, Oregon and Portland, Maine. I went to the page at http://direct.msn.com/about/cove...t/ coverage.aspx, entered several Portland, Oregon ZIP codes (97229, 97201, 97224) and was served up a map of the Portland, Maine area. Not a way to sell a service.
