I can still recall a similar look of horror and dismay over a 500 partner's cards after we had smugly bid our way to nine clubs, only for her to realise on the first trick that she mistaken "spades" (of which she had many, excluding bowers) for the necessary "clubs" (of which she had zero).
It was worth the ensuing carnage to recall that first, mortified glance into my eyes which said, quite clearly and calmly: Oh. Fuck.

franzy: yes, there's something truly primal about such moments. Not perhaps as primal as meeting Charlie for the first time presumably was, but fairly primal.
Jane: Thanks for the link. I think the unclean bodies song may have gone quiet after its first fine rapture. Fierce irony can have its dangers.

Thaks for the Premier's short list. I've read some of the YA novels and will be fascinated to know which one comes up. I found Dianne Bates's novel about self-harm particularly powerful, but we'll see what wins.
