Saw it, but ashamed to say the only reason for this is because I got up ridiculously early to take a piss. Thank you, weak bladder.

I got up at 3am, loaded 3 disgruntled kids and the wife into the car and attempted to get out of the mist which was enveloping Edinburgh.

We headed to the East Lothian coast and ended up breaking free of the mist at a beautiful beach next to Torness nuclear power station.

4.32 came and went without even a peek at the 'ring of fire' through the distant low cloud. The dawn light though had an eerie quality about it which took me back to the atmosphere of 1999.

By 5.05 we started to wander back to the car when my 8 year old son spotted it through the gloom, still at about 60%. Finally, just a few minutes before the moon's edge finally detached from the sun, we saw an unobstructed view as 'Rule Brittania' played on radio 4.

We did see it, and they definately wouldn't have preferred a Mr Whippy ice cream.
