The third reason, although not expressed, but left to anyone's reasonable assumption is : Tom is now suffering from dementia. In classical biblical terms it might lead to this type of generosity: "Forgive him Lord, for he comprehends not what sorts of evil he might promote"!

I'm not sure if that's a fair representatation. ThatMan obviously has a better memory for biblical reference!
