It really all comes down to when you believe life begins. Aborting a fetus at a time when you do not believe that it is truly a human life is not a conflict.

For the record, I don't think it would be acceptable for a doctor to be required to perform an abortion. I don't think taxpayers should be required to fund it either.
But I don't agree that a fetus is a person or that it should have all the rights of a person. Other than at the very late stages of a pregnancy, it is less than a person (i.e., it is different in a way that women or black people are not) because it can only survive in the pregnant woman's womb. It is not just a question of not killing the fetus, but of imposing a duty on the woman to keep it alive.

I would put that weight of the child on both parents, not just the mom, as that would be grossly unfair.
I would ask how it can be known that it is less than a person. People invoke "personhood" all the time but no one can define it or show what it is. In the absence of proof, I don't know how we can be so careless.
The survival question as you put it would also place the handicapped and the aged at our whim.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Here's my analysis of a Discover magazine article re: nature and abortions.

I discuss the moral implications of the science, to the best of my ability.
