Very good point about priests and Levites - most Christians fail to understand the special obligations of Cohens and Levites under the under the law. Even today in modern day secular Israel El Al cannot fly over a graveyard if a Cohen is present on the flight.

There are elements, I think, of Christian morality that fit into both the left & right political camps. Neither camp can claim victory on all the moral issues, in my opinion. WHat I find interesting is when people start trying to bend the moral codes of their religion to fit their political views - and I'm not saying you are doing this(!) But I think there was a lot of that going on during the 2004 election.

Steve - that was the point I was trying to make. Claiming God for yourself, your tribe or your ideology is silly. I hope my attempt to show there are good reasons for Christains to take marriage vows (and thus sex) as serious and public issues didn't muddle it. That's not a puritan Republican position, it's a Christian one.
Kate - you are a wealth of interesting info!

I surfed in from the connection on Dissect Left. It's interesting in that you note that this guy isn't a fool, and yet his ideas are quite silly. Perhaps the most silly of all is his basic approach. He seems to be saying, "Look, you people have got it all wrong. If you really understood your values properly and really understood us, you'd realize that we are the choice for you." And there is also this sense that if the message is simply repeated enough it will stick; the basic premise being that everyone is a fool and will just believe what you tell them if you say it enough and in the right language. It's a very patronizing view, and I fear that it's not the kind of attitude that leads to the kind of mutual respect and consensus that democracy requires.
