Here's a thought, perhaps its a gender thing. Men commonly romantised women, women rarely romantise other women. The whole "hooker with a heart of gold" is a male motiff. Men are often swept totally off their feet by the level of duplicity some women are capable of, whereas women can often see it quite clearly.
No doubt there are flaws in this thought but it did cross my mind reading your post.
It's a good one Kate. I would add that there are a signifigant number of people (esp. of my age. I'm in Cosh's age bracket) for whom one can't judge because it's all just a lifestyle choice. For them, there is no such category as the one I've used. Last thought. Women are accused of selling out sex because that if often what men want. It is not wanted by women to the same degree. The favour women want from men is most often money and / or fame. We lack a word for that.
