I have found that the desire for certainty, simplicity and ease of understanding seems to underlie the denominational choice of a number of Bible-Christians. Understandable, especially in a world such as ours has become. Tolkien nails an example of this attitude very well in the quote you posted. Faith is simple, yet profound and richly complex as well - we mustn't let apparent contradictions deter us from the greatest adventure ever embarked upon!
Just discovered your blog -- excellent writing and content. (Seems to be quite a few of us 'rediscovered Catholics' out there -- I can't absorb stuff fast enough!)

I was wondering if you're Catholic... I'm in your neck of the woods, actually, enjoying the mild weather (I hate hot summers). I'm a little bit familiar with Anglicanism in these parts, and the last quote accurately sums up my misgivings about the (often wonderful) evangelical Anglicanism in which I was married. Yes, they're orthodox, but not especially logically consistent.

I am Catholic, Ed. I'm also enjoying this summer more than the last two, which were too hot for me (they were even harder on my wife, who's not very heat tolerant).
