Couldn't help thinking as soon as I started reading Brandon's quote that this seemed to be an excellent argument for Protestants not to be messing with the Catholic holy book, i.e. the Bible, since they likewise so often ignore convention and context and do not respect how the Catholic religious community itself orders the reading of its own book.
And what about the 2000 years of consensus of the Catholic community? Likewise the interpretation of the Bible is "communal" and not individual, as Protestants assert.
But hey, isn't all this sort of basic thinking? It's what the Catholic Church has been telling schismatics right from the beginning.
Anyway, sorry to distract from the Muslim perspective, and I have no idea of the Catholic/Protestant counterparts in that debate, but some principles are indeed universal.
