Have a Merry Christmas and I'm suggesting Michael Burleigh's 'Earthly Powers' for you. It's a look at the rise of political religion in the 19th century, and a defense of the Catholic church's response to it. It is extremely well written, (and you'll like the argument).

It does look interesting. I have given thought to his book on the 3rd Reich as well.
