If Luther was a second rate theologian, I think you're already a bit off track for a blogger.
It might be a few posts before I get to Luther but if I misunderstand him I hope you'll be here to put me right.
For what it's worth, my mother is Lutheran and I would describe Augustine and Aquinas as first rate theologians. Ratzinger impresses me but I haven't seen enought to say one way or another yet.
