Gravatar Ha, good thing you have residencies, huh?

Gravatar You made me laugh reading this one. I'm a nurse and love your blog. Keep writing!

Gravatar Sad a teenager already knows the drill and funny/cool you are willing to learn from your patients!

Gravatar Too funny! My kids have been through the medical stuff, too. Our orthopedist flipped when my daughter looked at her MRI and diagnosed her own torn ACL. If he knew how much time she spent researching anatomy due to her brother's cerebral palsy, he wouldn't have found it out of the ordinary.

I love your blog and so does my daughter.

Gravatar For some reason, it makes me feel better that being in the hospital on a weekend is a pain for the doctors as well as the patients. When we've been stuck there on the weekends with our wee ones, it feels like we're just racking up more bills, waiting for Monday to arrive so whatever specialist we need to see will be back at work!

Gravatar Kudos to you for not treating the patient like she didn't know what she was doing. I had a GI doc when I was in college who treated me like I was in high school - like I must have been completely unaware of how a body works. Granted, I was a year younger than my classmates, but I was a sophomore in college who reminded him (on every visit) that no, they didn't teach anatomy in high school (at least not at mine), and that I was actually in college.... I left angry every time because I felt totally ignored - it didn't make for a good dr-patient relationship.

Gravatar my x-ray tech used to always laugh when I came in because I knew the drill so well. We still went through it so he wouldn't get in trouble and he tried to have a secret crush on me. It was always the best part of those "hold your breath" trips because I knew exactly how it would go.

Gravatar too bad you aren't in my neck of the wood... I'd pick you to be our childrens pediatrician in a heartbeat. We'll be getting our fill of doctors starting next week.

Gravatar I had to laugh, because after watching my friends little one go through a bone marrow transplant for HLH, and seeing all the different tests, I think her mom could do some of the tests as well... at least you showed the patient some respect, and didn't make her feel bad.

Gravatar AACK! Well that is a little scary.. For ALL involved!

Gravatar That's funny that just posted about EKGs. I'm overseas with the military (my husband is active duty) and I had to have an EKG/ultrasound out in town with one of the local doctors.
They tell me that he has been practicing for YEARS (and he certainly looked it), but maybe he needed to look at his manual, too. My heart problem? The one I've had for the entire 28 years of my existence? He couldn't find it!

Gravatar That's funny in a not so funny way! You know, I totally appreciate when doctors/nurses treat us like we know what is going on. And it feels quite good to know more than a doctor about something!

Gravatar I can't imagine working that many hours without sleep and still be able to function. I'm a nurse and have worked doubles but never that long. Keep posting you have very interesting stories!!!

Gravatar Seriously?? Interesting.

Gravatar reminds me of the first time i had to do a 12-lead as an USAFR aerospace med tech at Wright-Patt AFB...good times!

Gravatar I agree with Linda. Funny story but sad that the kid already knew the drill.

Gravatar I've always been a fan of interns at the docs office...they are generally fun, cool and have it more together than the doc! I will admit that I've had one bad experience with an intern the one who they let give me the epidural. Long story with lots of screaming! Poor girl, I freaked her out! Wish I could bring my little ones to see you.

Gravatar You are the kind of doctor that most patients can only dream of having walk into their hospital room. You admit that MD does not stand for Medical Deity and you respect the knowledge that your patients have from their own experiences in the medical world. I wish that there were more doctors out there like you!!

Gravatar great post...sweet kid!

the weekend reference confirms our experience around here with getting sick on the "wrong" day of the week. all tests postponed till Monday. and hopefully it's not a long weekend...
