Being from the South, Columbus Day isn't a "big deal." My father asked me the other day if I even knew what Columbus Day was really about. My answer:
'Really? The celebration of discovery, I guess. Actually? Schools are closed, banks are closed, and the mail doesn't run.'
A day off school? Yes. Yes, children love that.
