I'm so glad the PETS act was passed! You can never be totally prepared for these storms, but we need to be as prepared as possible. I sure hope FL and all the many many people who were affected w/natural disasters from these storms, will be prepared better this year and hopefully it will be a calmer year! Here in VA we are more protected w/NC sticking out there and being farther up the coast, but I know we too are not immune and need to stay on our toes and be prepared. So many think, oh we can ride the storm out and they live right on the beach!! Like I told a friend today, better safe than sorry. Especially when you're dealing with an uncontrolably force such as a hurricane!!

Thank you for reminding the Lady of something she has to do. We don't have hurricanes or tornados here in Cally-4-knee-ya, but I hear we do have something called erf-quakes. I don't know what they are, but we have to have supplies just in case. The Lady needs to update our stash of supplies and she needs to replace one of the plastic gallon jugs of water because Cocoa decided to put the bitey on it, and it leaked all over the floor. My brother is so annoying!

Like many pet owners, I would have never evacuated without my cats. I live in Baton Rouge (80 miles from New Orleans), so had to deal with Katrina and Rita last year. We had a lot of rain and wind and was without electricity for 5 days after Katrina and 3 days after Rita. However both Mrs B and Bubbles were save and dry. Bubbles is an indoor/outdoor cat, but he hates getting wet, so at the first sign of rain he practically gallops home. He used to be a stray, so I guess he's had enough of being rained on.

Here, in the Pacific NW, we have another clear and present danger, completely different from yours, but a terrible fear, nevertheless. Forest Fires!!! They can move at unbelievable speed, burning everything in their path. 10 years ago 300 homes burned in Spokane, not that far from me. We are in the middle of fire season right now, with fires to the north and south of us. I have figured out, in case I have to evacuate, the cats go in their carriers first, then pictures, bookwork, the quilt that was handmade for us by my sister in law, and my computer, if I have time. 30 years ago we lived in Minnesota and know the terror of tornadoes. I guess where ever you live, you are never safe from natural disaster. OUr best wishes to you during this hurricane season.

The woman has three carriers and always has stuff ready for us. Another blog had suggested getting bins to put in stuff for emergencies, so you aren't running around looking for toothpaste and things like cat food, which can be easy to forget. She has put something like that together.
I certainly hope she never has to use it. I hate the car.

we hope that this season will not be bad for any of you living in the gulf states. having essentials for humans and pets ready to go at a moments notice is important for all of us, no matter where we live. a friend in Ohio had to evacuate because of a gas explosion and had to leave her precious dogs behind because she had no time to get them and all they needed. fortunately, they were safe, but she was a basket case until she was able to get back to them. The pets were the first thing I thought about when I saw what was happening with the Katrina evacuations. Thousands of people must have been heartbroken about their lost pets. I know I couldn't leave Beau Beau and Angie behind. I love them more than anything or anyone.
