Gravatar "Spear-pulled?"

Gravatar Julia, you put me to shame. I don't know how you have the energy to whizz around London in this heat. Well done on the Washingtonia, it sounds like a really good bargain. I thought mine had had it, but it's come back again, thank goodness. The ones in my local garden centre were titchy and cost £15. Your pond is really cute. The offer of a couple of goldfish still stands...

Gravatar Spear-pulling is what happens when, over winter, the inside of a palm rots and a gentle pull on the emerging spear will result in it coming clean away. Sometimes plants come back from it (a few of my buddies have put tin foil over the stumps and found new spears breaking through) but mine was toast, and I upgraded to a bigger, better one for less than I'd paid for the dead one!

Victoria - the courtesy car I have while I'm waiting for our car to be fixed (insurance company settling and sending me the money would be a start) has air conditioning. I couldn't do it otherwise! When I parked at Crews Hill I accidentally left half a cup of coffee in the car, and when I came back two hours later it was still piping hot and good to drink!

I do wonder about goldfish - I could sit and watch fish in ponds all day. I have oxygenating plant and bloodworms a go-go, but the "pond" is only 12 inches wide and probably only 6 inches deep. I don't know if they'd be happy in that little water.

Gravatar You have so many wonderful plants! I love your garden.

Gravatar Crews Hill Gardening Club is a great place - I've been a member for many years. It's the only nursery I know where I can pick up different coloured mind-your-business.

Gravatar It's great there. I know I could spend a whole day just wandering around with a trolley. And it benefits from having a Krispy Kreme cafe just before you turn off the A10.
