Darfur is probably the worst humanitarian crisis facing the world today, and in the last several years (except perhaps terrorism/militia murders in Iraq). It's a continuous campaign of ethnic cleansing, if not genocide, supported by the ruling government and willfully ignored by many in the world. Efforts at the UN have been laughable.
The Israel-Hizbollah war sucked for Lebanon, but it's nowhere near the same scale (and everyone was aware of it anyways). I'm sure if it was as bad as Darfur (or as likely to slip from peoples' awareness), it would start popping up on Google Earth. For now, there's far more much worse situations all over the world.

That is a very good question indeed. How does Google make the decision about what qualifies as a humanitarian disaster? What about Palestinians starving in Gaza and drowning in their sewage? Is that a crisis?

Sometimes the media may be biased towards Israel, sometimes against. After the Battle of Jenin in 2002 newspapers and tv only showed pictures of this totally devastated section in the refugee camp part of the city. The place looked like hell and Israel looked bad.
Then though, once you zoomed out, you realized that the devastated zone was about one block in size. The battle looked rather limited.
Anyway, three cheers for Google,

info-gate keeping is a huge responsibility..
i reckon journalism skills are more and more relevant to standard online communication these days..
very few people are trained to present a balanced and fair story..
for my part - i hope your deliberation is never tested..
