I agree that it is a ridiculous position for any other defense minister.
However, if you look at the picture from a different perspective, you might notice that Ashkinazi's binoculars are fully functional.
It might only be symbolic, but remember that this guy is the new man in charge and it doesn't seem HE is flying blind.
