My MIL gave us bamboo tongs to use for taking things out of toasters. At first I thought it was silly but they've turned out very useful. You could also unplug the toaster to remove something with a metal knife. If you do go that way make sure it's at least an interesting thing you're removing from the toaster.

latenac, you and your bamboo tongs idea may have just saved our marriage. (And my life.)

It's my husband who sticks stuff in the toaster and me who gasps.
Wait. Are you talking about real toasters or.....?

I usually use wooden chopsticks to do this, except sometimes I forget which category matters more — and then I'm that person who uses metal chopsticks to prise a bagel out of the toaster.
