I use the long tail theory all of the time. It's called "Don't put all of your eggs in one basket."
The reason why the long tail theory is so popular is because it offers the "little guy" hope that he can somehow beome wealthy with little effort.
The way I see it, the only ones getting wealthy on the long tail theory are those who are able to convince the get rich quick crowd to spend money for the "how-to" guides that will get them nowhere.

HA! Great post! As a non-tech/non-marketer, I always thought the 'long tail' meant someone was trailing TP from their shoe after a 'brainstorming meeting' in the 'small conference room.'
Thanks for the continuing edutainment~

You make me smile.
I thought Anderson's "Long Tail" was just recycled niche marketing. Something like what Seth Godin did when he recycled direct marketing principles and called it Permission Marketing. Old ideas given new names and a lot of hype. Doesn't make the idea bad but the associated hype can convince a lot of Fatheads to spend more on the idea than it is worth.
