THANK YOU! I posted the same thing in Gil's comments. I'm too lazy to write the whole thing out, and you probably did a better job anyway.

Slightly off topic:
The Taz has nothing to do with this. As I'm sure you know, in 2 separate places the Taz makes his famous comments; both are directed to a situation where the Torah COMMANDS us to do something (like blowing a horn on the New Year). To say that the Torah COMMANDED us to take 2 wives is ridiculous. I let this pass on the other blog, but you should know better.

But sof kol sof, for whatever reason the Torah permits polygamy. That is where the Taz comes in.
Bill: See my follow-up post. It is a mahlokes aharonim whether that matters.

I just want to say, on a personal level, that leaving private comments on someone else's blog contravenes a number of the league's bylaws.

Great, so the Taz doesn't disagree. Gil thuinks that the Taz would, so the question about Eishes Yefas Toar would still stand. Maybe that's why Chareidim avoid the army; they don't want their kids to run around raping Arab women and forcibly converting them.
