Afghan Lord, forgive any impoliteness from me, I am new to this, but extremely interested in your views. If I say something rude, it is stupidity on my part, not intentional. Just got broadband connection to read blogs from your area and to get more understanding than from US television news.
Do you think the tensions, which appear to be rising according to our news reports, would have happened without this controversial issue?

I believe that this sick man after deportation from Germany understood the immigration law and using Christianity as a shell to get asylum in west. Its very simple. And he played with world of Christianity and all afghan people.
How many times he visit Church in Germany while he was livening there?

Shawn, think you were asking Mr Lord, but if directed toward me...I am more zen bunny universal respecter of all (hippie type, old grandmaw type). *grin*
And that is interesting, that he was seeking a way out, a way in, and some media driven support. It sure worked...so far.

I'm a bit confused by your last but one final paragraph on Christians and others living in Afghanistan. Your English is a bit confusing here, so forgive me if I am missing the point. I think what you are saying is something about how being a Christian in Afghanistan is not a crime in itself - and that's true. The crime, under the terms of the Constitution, is converting from Islam to another religion.
Accepting what you say about the man's origins, it does seem suspicious that he claimed Christianity when he got back to Afghanistan. But what a hugely dangerous game that would be to play. It could never have been certain that he would have ended up being given asylum. If I were him, I'd have seriously feared being killed. Indeed, in exile I would still fear being killed, as he's now such a high-profile figure.

Mr Lord, do you think tensions were rising in your country before this issue?
Al Jack raised some interesting points about the West going nuts over this gent but allowing abortion (hotly debated here, as well). Since I can't get into *his* comments section, I will ask here, hope it's okay. Does this seem to be inane for we in the US to allow abortion, in MY view to curtail unwanted pregnancies and unsupportable (for whatever political, social reasons) poverty...and yet to scream bloody murder over the Sharia (did I get this right?) law applied here?
thank you, Janica

He was motivated by his former ally, Mojaheden , to put pressure on the government there is no sensible reason to bring that sensitive issue to public attention. In a country that until 5 years ago thousand of people were killed in Bambyan, Mazar Sharif and etc because of their religious identity and race, in spite they were Muslim but they believe in different branch of Islam .
If he was a Christian for real why he was deported from Germany in the first place? German Government can asses the Afghanistan situation? How he was lived in Afghanistan for one year and no one disturb him at all?
People who was behind him they gave him assurance nothing would be happed to him!
I think he just fool world leaders and pop simply.
Afghanistan authority make a good decision to free him and send him to Vatican.
I hope he become a good priest there. At the end of the day religion can not change nature of human. All these religion (Islam, Christianity and Jewish)are man made and all based on the same rule of Judaism

Regardless of Abdul Rahman's ulterior motives behind his decision to convert, the fact remains that there are key contradictions inherent in letter of the law and in social attitudes towards this subject in Afghanistan and many other Muslim countries... Let's get over the personal tidbits and over Abdul Rahman's case as a whole... the occasion should be used to discuss the merits and relevance of the apostasy clause to modern society...

Janica - under the terms of Afghanistan's constitution, apostates are punishable by death.

Thanks, Susan. Sent me to the dictionary to look up apostate. *smile* Reading these blogs is much better than the town hall meeting on CNN right now (and that's not personal, altho GW's actions certainly have become such! Miserably)

Hello Sohrab, I too am Afghan and new to your blog. I don't understand why it's a big deal that a guy converted to Christianity. Nowhere in Islam does it say one must die if they leave Islam. Are these mentalities fed from the media, mullahs, or just rampant stupidity?
I like your blog by the way, I will be checking in often .

No man can examine the heart of another, thus, only God knows the heart of this convert.
Being a Christian is not the same as being a Catholic - they are definitely not compatible although the world would have you think so.
Religion is man made and many times does not lead to God or his Spirit. If you want to truly know God - ask him to reveal himself to you. It is a prayer that never fails.
