I have been following your stories about this, and I am so glad to see this coming along. I have high hopes for the people of Afghanistan, even though it seems at times for every step toward the goal, there are two away from it. Thank you for sharing this inspiring story. I hope there are more workshops, and more Afghans gain access and interest in blogging and internet resources.

Mirandian introduced me to your blog. It is an honor to meet you.
I looked over your last few articles and look forward to learning more from my new Gandhara friend (Mazar-e-Sharif use to be called Gandhara 4,000 years ago), should I be worthy to be considered your friend.
Since I see that you are interested in the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), I thought I would introduce you to a summary of the Afghan security forces maintained by some friends of mine:

index.php
A major update will come out in the next few days.
Your army is amazing. It is interesting how the ANA performs so much better than the Pakistani army in every concievable way when fighting the Taliban/Pakistani resistance/AQ.
Are you intersted in more info on the ANSF?
Afghan blogs were slow to take off compared to blogs from other parts of the world. But recently, you have been catching up. I think that those who underestimate Afghans do so at their own peril

I am considering a job as an attorney in Kabul. My greatest hesitation comes from fear for my safety. Can you give me a realistic picture of what I can expect if I accept the position? I am an American and have rather light hair and skin, which leads to more concern. All comments appreciated!

Anand, good to see u here. I am sure your knowledge/comments would be appreciated!
SMD - I can understand your apprehension...but sometimes, only when you have visited the place would you be able to gauge the situation...and again in spite of the danger...the place holds you or you are drawn to the situation... because you want to...you need to...you have to....Hope this makes sense. All the best...whatever you finally decide.

Mirandian or anyone else here, how quickly do you think NATO should end the occupation of Afghanistan? 2 years? 5 years?
Why do you think the ANSF has been having a difficult time fighting the Taliban? Is it because the Taliban is popular inside Afghanistan? Is it because the Afghan government (at all levels) is incompetent? How is the Taliban getting huge sums of money to wage their war?
Do you think Pakistan, KSA, and the other Sunni Arab states are friends of Afghanistan? Are they trying to help Afghans?
These are rhetorical questions by the way. I don't like the Taliban.

Anand - Do u really think its in the hands of NATO to end the occupation?? As for ending it...this should have been yesterday!
I wouldn't say Taliban is popular. As for the Afghan Government being incompetent...I really cannot comment on that....don't know much but what I can see is that they do not have the manpower and I guess the infrastructure to exist and tackle the situation without the outside help. Do you really think the common man is really concerned in analyzing all this? The majority (who are still in the country) are busy trying to earn a living, getting on with their day to day existence. They just want to get back leading a normal life. The destruction this war/occupation has caused has left the country in shambles.
No, I don't think any of the countries that you have mentioned is a friend of Afghanistan. They are only concerned being a friend of America.

Mirandian, this American thinks that all these countries are America's enemies (not that we should attack these countries, mind you.)
Micheal Yon's friend Mr. Holloway suggests peace negotions between the UK and the Taliban:
http://michaelyon-online.com/
ind...id=55#yvComment
It is interesting that by far the worst sector in Afghanistan is the UK sector. How far the Brits have fallen.
Any perspectives on Mr. Holloway's suggestions? Some people believe that negotiating with the Taliban risks turning the Afghan people against us (because most Afghans don't like the Taliban):

paper2671.html
Personally, what the hell, might as well give the Taliban a hug. After that Bin Laden. And then Abu Deraa. Then we can all sing "The whole world is in your hands," in a circle . . . together.
BTW, I agree fully with your comments. I really wish that the world would give Afghanistan more foreign aid.
I am thinking of writing some articles about the Afghan government (civilian ministries), civil affairs, foreign aid, and economy.
My friends are working on a major summary of the Afghan security forces and their development plans (it will be published shortly.)

Anand....1st thanks for the links. Holloway's article...hmmmm pretty interesting I must say. He talks a lot of sense....I definitely agree with him...to bring peace talk to the Talebans....they are the ordinary people...
You giving Taleban a hug and then singing & dancing in a circle? That would be a sight! But, I don't think you would dare....not without Mojo!
BTW...you say you're thinking of writing some articles? Is it for a paper? Are you a freelance writer? Is this your profession, if I may ask??

I am thinking about writing an article on the Afghan economy and civilian governance for a friend's blog. But first, my friends publish a summary of the Afghan security forces.
If I write anything on the Iraqi economy/GoI, it would probably be for Mojo's blog.
Mirandian, I have no problem negotiating with local Afghan pashtu tribes that might have work with the Taliban. There is, however, a danger negotiating directly with hard core Takfiris:
http://www.weeklystandard.com/
we..._talks_with.asp
http://www.longwarjournal.org/
ar...is_negotiat.php
A general word of advice, if you see a hardcore Takfiri (not a religious Salafi), run. Don't look. Run.
Like what they said about agents from the original Matrix (1999.)
Afghan Lord, sorry to take up your space for cross-talk with Mirandian. I still look forward to learning more about Afghanistan from you. I love Afghan history. There are Indus civilization cities in Afghanistan that haven't been excavated (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Indus_Valley_Civilization.) Your cities shared common financial systems, coinage, technology and customs with the cities of Northern India, Pakistan, the southern former USSR, and Eastern Iran.

Anand.....your advice to run, sadly will be discarded. I am the type who will stop when I see a wild dog as (1) I will not be able to outrun him (2) My calm attitude (at least on the outside!) will make him relax? ponder? hesitate? More chances of getting out alive...if you get my drift!
BTW...writing for a friend's blog...Mojo's Bog....looks like Blogging is your Full Time Occupation?!
