Gravatar Great post! It is scary that teachers like this are working in the system. Do you think we should make it easier to terminate teachers like this?

Gravatar And Julie Amero, in Connecticut, is facing 40 years in jail for not having the training to know how to handle a porn storm on a school computer -- a school computer that was unprotected by the district's incompetence?

The best collection of commentary on l'affaire Amero here:

Sheesh.

Gravatar Can I play? How about a professor who comes to her 9 am class drunk shows her, uhm, naughty bits to students in the lecture hall and talks about what great sex she had last night? How about a professor who tells his class repeatedly that women have no business going to college, looks at one or two women in his class and tells them they know what they'll have to do if they want to pass?

I've got plenty more.

Gravatar How about we stop importing all these foreign students, then NYC wouldn't have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to 'educate' the world's overpopulation.

Gravatar How about hiring good teachers instead of bad ones? How about we cut down on the xenophobia? And where is the post these comments are coming from?

Gravatar I don't agree that we're "importing"
students, and I'm honored to teach immigrant students. Many, many of them are among the very best people I've ever met.

And I do indeed educate them--without quotation marks.

NYC's bottom of the barrel policies have everything to do with money and values, and little to do with immigrants. There are plenty in the suburban town in which I live, and they get good teachers, small classes, and decent facilities.

As should all children.

This seems to be attached to a post from last year, entitled "Bad Teachers", and I may comment on it tomorrow.

Gravatar No real change will occcur for the obvious reason: teacher's and other public employees unions are the backbone of the Democratic Party. The guiding group of the other-equally bad-party seems to be the employers of illegal labor.

Gravatar How 'bout all the teachers there thru nepotism?

Gravatar Why is it so hard to fire bad teachers? Are our school systems so desparate for anyone to teach our kids that they'll put up with loons, malcontents, drug abusers, pedofiles, etc. or just folks who can't seem to do their jobs.

As a parent and a founder of charter school, I know our school system is in urgent need of decent special ed teachers. My children's school has already fired two, and the therapists we get from the district are odd ducks who don't feel like doing their jobs past March 1.

Gravatar I always found the enjoyed the humor of Woody Allen who once said: "My education was dismal. I went to a series of schools for mentally disturbed teachers."

What's said in jest is meant in earnest.

Gravatar look it is not hard for me to know that we have bad teachers, but right now my teacher always berates speakes of English as a second language for our unforgivable lack of English ability. The bad thing is that I am not that stupid, and I know what she is saying.

Gravatar nyc educator,

i have a lot of respect for many of your viewpoints and often read your blog, but if you think that the populating of our schools by an overabundace of illegal/legal immigrants don't put a tax on the school system, i have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. They are a HUGE imposition on the school system, and since their parents pay no taxes, the rest of us support them. BTW, I agree with you that many of these students are wonderful people and hard workers. Even more reason for their parents to set the right example by not coming to another country and breaking their laws. There are too many legal immigrants who attempt to come here the right way. And Fred, it is not xenophobia to acknowledge a true problem for our school system. To be intellectually honest, it cannot be ignored.

Gravatar oh and a follow up NYCE. I also live in a suburban school district on LI, and it is nowhere near the same numbers of illegal immigrants as the NYC educational system.
