I'd never trust the airline to treat guitars like the valuable instruments they are. Of course, traveling with more than one guitar or other stringed instrument per player can get awkward. My son is the proud owner, however, of both an electric and an acoustic guitar. We will keep in mind that "United Airlines breaks guitars". It's good to know!
The thing with guitars is they're too big. Now violins--you can fit two of them in one case. I think, though, if an airline employee broke my good violin I'd have a heart attack.
I hate United- given the choice, I'd never fly with them again.
