I grew up in a year-round-school district in the midwest. When done properly, it's actually a wonderful thing. You see, we had school for 9-10 weeks, and then a 3 week break, repeat 4 times, and throw in a few extra weeks of break at summer and Christmas. Just as we were tired of school, we had a break. Just as we became bored on break, we had school. The beginning of each quarter wasn't spent reviewing because the info was still fresh. My family and I went to Disney World in the middle of October when it was still warm and there were no lines on the rides. I LOVED it. My whole family loved it.
But if we're going to do it here in NYC, why should it make sense?

The problem here is that Klein can always find a way to undermine the contract. It's not only a longer school year, but school day too.
Klein has made Randi fold on every important issue. She gave up LIF then promised to renegotiate that provision if LIFs increased. They have, and she has yet to renegotiate.

What miss S says sounds interesting, but is not what the DOE has in mind. My guess, they want to keep everything just as it is but add summer school as part of the regular school year. They would add a 1 week vacation first week of july then have you work straight thru july into 2nd week of August. Give you 2 weeks then back to school for new semester.

I thought the the school year and the length of the day was pretty clear in the contract. There is nothing to "fold" on because this contract is done until 2009. But we shouldn't be surprised that Klein tries to find new ways to get at us.
