Gravatar I worked summers for 8 years, and then my college summer school job was canceled one June.

It turned out well, and I won't take a summer teaching job (of any type) again.

What am I doing this summer? Not teaching.

Gravatar I'm following Jonathan's suggestion and not working.

Gravatar Similar stuff for me- last year I worked a phenomenal Title III summer school program, that entailed myself and two other teachers teaching SAT prep, personal statements and going on college trips with ELL's four days a week- that's gone due to the budget cuts.

I put in an application for "regular" summer school, but as of today, have not heard a thing- I'm pretty sure it's way too competitive this year.

I will relax, work on my lesson plans, put up flyers for English tutoring in well to do nabes, make music, write, get married, all, actually, in that order... lol.

Gravatar One week Switzerland
Two weeks Canadian Rockies
Four day cruise

Museums, theater, random subway days exploring the great city we live in. do this while you daughter is in camp!

have fun!

Gravatar Well, all those plans sound pretty good. I have only one question--is "not working" the same as "networking?" Because people are always telling me to do that.

Gravatar Listen to the people who say "network," nod with appreciation. Blog a little. That's "networking." It's all about the language.
I build a wooden planter box the first week of every summer. That allows me to say, "I've been doing some construction around the house."

Gravatar First of all...relax. Sleep late when you can. Surf the web for some ideas for an August trip. You can go to the PoD Travel site for some ideas. Of course get to those projects around the house you have been promising your wife and complete a few of them.

The next school year will give you very little time for relaxing if you get my drift. So do it now.

Gravatar I took the summer off, too. This is also the first year we've made no vacation plans. We live in the L.A. area, and my son and I have gone on state park/museum/beach binge. Haven't been so relaxed or had so much fun in a long time, and we're also learning as we enjoy! Along the way, I've discovered resources that I'll use in my teaching next year, such as "teaching trunks" available for checkout from our Natural History Museum.

Gravatar The first year I didn't work in the summer, I twitched for the first week of vacation. At some point it hit me that not working was a beautiful thing, and I never looked back.

Enjoy. Rest. Get some peace.

Gravatar By not teaching for a couple of months you will find that you are a better teacher during the school year. Chances are you'll never work another summer again.

Gravatar This is my third summer off and I wll never work summer school again. I enjoy my time off. I hike, take day trips, and go to the beach.

Gravatar Blogging, writing, day trips, reading, planning for next year, visiting friends and family, hanging out at the beach...nothing too serious but I'm way excited. I got a grant to do some curriculum writing, but that's not too intense as I'm already almost done.

I'll be at the beach tomorrow, street festival/Pride parade on Sunday, and going upstate for a day or two next week.

Have a beautiful summer!

Gravatar I will be working at another school in September and had to lug all - and I mean ALL - of my crap home. I had signed up for summer school but I found out today that my position was double-booked, so to speak, and I'm somewhat pleased. Only because I've worked summer school for five years now and could really use the break. I need to reorganize because I'll be teaching a higher grade and need to look through all of my elementary stuff. I have to clean that crap out! I've already started! Plus, I plan to go to NYC for some shows, tour the Philly sights, and just chill. I've had a horrible year and I want rock-out my new school! Yeah, me!

Gravatar I was lucky and never had to work even one summer. The complete 2 month chill out left me ready for the new year. I agree with North Brooklyn: Not working summers renews you for the next year.

Gravatar i worked summer school for the past 9 summers. My husband said he is making enough money so i don't need to work. I am beside myself with joy! he told me to get a project around the house--like painting or something. My only "project" will be to sit on the beach with a pina colada and read, read and then read some more!! Enjoy your summer!!

Gravatar I love going to the outer banks in North Carolina. Some refer to it as Nags Head. It's the beach where families go for the summer. It is so beautiful there that I could imagine retiring there.

What I like is that the beach homes are usully pretty reasonable unless you are directly on the water front. It is laid back and of course if you like to fish or boat or just hang out at the beach its great. The beach is in walking distance. They have the usual attractions like biking, trails, minature golf, go-carting, boating just to name some and the food is great.

You don't see a lot of older teenagers or young people in their twenties unless of course they are with their families. I hate to sound like an old timer but the peace and solitude and ocean breezes are all wonderful. Many homes allow pets too.

Gravatar That's awesome that you dont have to work this summer. That's the one part about being a teacher that I have always been envious of is having summers off. You might have to take up a new hobby like powerbocking which can be done on jumping stilts I'd love to see jumping around on a pair of these!
