My first summer -- 2005 -- was my awakening. Though most of my 6th graders had good attendance and at least tried to do their work (in a room w/o air conditioning, no less), one kid missed 9 of the 18 days. I was told of the hassles involved in failing him -- chief among them justifying it to his home principal -- and got the hint. He passed. I'm sure he just finished a banner 9th grade year. Or maybe it was 8th.

PS: Please don't tell any administrative types--they don't know how to have fun, do they?
