My sister got rid of a $77,000 medical bill by declaring bankruptcy.
She was thrilled to be able to clear her debt this way. She used to have a job that came with good health insurance but she was looking for a job that "fulfilled" her and quit. She now does not work regularly and she has no regular income, let alone insurance. She would not go to a city hospital because those are for "immigrants".
While everyone should have medical care, I resent her not working and taking advantage of the system.

It's also tough to see how older people are treated once they are on medicare. After watching what my mom experienced, I kind of feel like it's just a "take a number" game that nobody wins.

You're absolutely right. We could certainly improve it, though under our current leadership it's a virtual non-starter.
Still, Medicare is much better than the alternative, which is no coverage whatsoever. The prescription drug agreement in which Medicare is not permitted to negotiate lower drug prices is simply a disgrace. It shows the priorities of our government have little to do with helping those of us in need.
