Sorry to post so extremely off-topic, but I have an urgent question.
If you're a teacher in the NYC schools, what exactly is the procedure for quitting mid-year? Who do I give the resignation to?
I know the thought of that shocks most people, but trust me, you don't know the situation I'm in. The tipping point is that I'm an ESL teacher but I'm not allowed to teach for most of the week, having to do random coverages and stupid paper work, while federally mandated ESL services go unprovided. The school is a zoo and coverages are like being thrown in the lion's cage without a whip (no lesson plans, no sub work, and half the time the students are wandering in the halls when I get there and using the filthiest language with each other once I get them inside). And oh yeah I get criticized constantly by the principal regarding what teaching I do get to do. I get physically sick every night before bedtime at the thought of going back there the next day. All for a salary that leaves a lot to be desired.
Seriously, where do I send the resignation letter? How much notice? I want to finish out the semester and give the kids the grades and possibly stay on till there's a replacement (though that's unlikely).

I'm very sorry to hear how unhappy you are. If you're getting sick at the very thought of going to work, that's a bad sign indeed.
I don't know what grade you teach, but I'm a high school teacher, and there's usually a reorganization right before February, so that might be a good time for you.
I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I'm an ESL teacher too, and I think it's the very best thing to teach, which is why I do it. As a high school teacher, I have my own classes and my situation has always been better than what you describe. I lose a few weeks giving mandated tests but not more.
I'm sorry things have worked out so badly for you. Colleagues I know who've resigned have submitted letters to the principal. Check with your payroll secretary and your UFT rep, both of whom will be able to help you better than I can.

Thanks so much for the sympathy and straight-up advice.
Hmm...so I can't just resign via DoE HR? I think I'll just call them. I'd feel funny talking to either the secretary or the chapter chair since they're both kinda friends (we're all hanging in together at this place) and I know they'll be telling me not to go...
