Bad teachers come in all ages. One new teacher lost a couple of her first graders on a trip. She got on the bus and left them at the show. They returned with another teacher. But the principal liked her. Years later she failed to meet the requirements for certification.
All the teachers were happy that after so many years getting away with not teaching to the standards, she would be gone. It was the union who helped her even though the representative was told about her.
Another really bad teacher was almost denied tenure, but my principal relented the last moment.
In both cases, the principal was to blame. Now with principals having the power to hire without the SBO team, they will hire "friends of friends". I know many older teachers that always put down new methods before trying them. But some are pretty good in the classroom.
They funny thing is my principal got the highest score on last year's survey as being collaborative when in fact her favorite answer is "No!" Some teachers told me that they were afraid she would be mad if they responded differently.
As far as teachers leaving, Ms. Mararkey and Jules both talk about it on their blogs. They are good teachers who are not supported by the system. Instead of putting money into "real" PD, another million is going to the Gotcha Squard.
The bottom line is really money and not true education.
