She inflates her teaching experience the way her friend Hillary inflates her war experience. Two peas from the same pod.

A "part-time" teacher? Is there such a thing? Did they assign her classes and dump them on subs when she didn't show up or was she just a sub herself? Either way she doesn't really seem like a regular teacher. I think she has more experience than the chancellor at least.

Let's see Randi only worked as a full time teacher for six months. Was a per diem teacher for the other time in the six month period but has nine years of pensionable city time. The math does not add up.

More importantly how did she get credit full time service for her teaching certificate?

Finally, it's the lawyers that are killing education, be it Randi, Joel, or the lawyer elite surrounding Bloomberg.

Gravatar Chaz-

That Voice article was written in 2003. Add another five years and Randi now has 14 years of pensionable or should we say double pensionable time. Actually, since she's been with the UFT even longer, her UFT pensionable time is quite a bit more.

The DOE credited her with the teaching time. Why do you think she will not take them on? This was a campaign issue last year in the UFT election but nobody wanted to listen to ICE. I'm surprised it's coming up again now. This is old news and many have wondered why it never was exposed widely.

Gravatar anon:

Are you saying that as UFT president she is still getting public pension time? I think this is illegal since she no longer works for a public agency. If true it should be brought to Andrew Cuomo as an abuse of the State pension system.

Gravatar "part-time job teaching"

Hey! That's what I do!!

Gravatar The idea that Randi wouldn't take the DOE on because she was afraid for her pension is rediculous and I never remember that being an ICE position in the election campaign - though it was talked about in a post on the ICE blog.I

I'm sure Randi could have earned more money as a lawyer than as UFT president.

From what I understand about her 6 years as teaching is that the UFT may have reimbursed the DEO for all the time she didn't teach. She negotiated the 2005 contract version 1 (which was rejected by the membership) while teaching mornings at Clara Barton. Also version 2 which was accepted after the UFT PR machine went into action. A friend said she left after 11 or so. She also coached the debate team at one point, a comp time job.

In her 6 month full time - which she may have needed to do to legitimize herself with the members and maybe to make herself eligible for the pension credit (which the UFT may also be reimbusing the DOE for - I hear she may have done some hall patrol. Maybe she liked it and that's why it's back in the contract.

As to the point that she gets pension and salary credit (again reimbursed by the UFT) the theory in all teacher unions would be that if someone becomes president, their career ladder shouldn't be compromised or the job would be less attractive - think Debbie Lynch in Chicago who lost after her first term and went back to the classroom. Why should she have lost the time served if the union pays the city back?

Of course, in NYC with the monarchistic Unity machine in place the entire idea is preposterous.

Gravatar I think the whole point of this post was to point out that the Times did not elaborate on the truth about her "teaching time". Others may think she taught a full day from reading the story.

Gravatar Chaz it is in the contract that officers are credited for the time they are doing union work. Here's what Article 19C says:

Leaves of Absence for Union Officers

Employees who are officers of the Union or who are appointed to its staff shall, upon proper application, be given a leave of absence without pay for each schoolyear during the term of this Agreement for the purpose of performing legitimate duties for the Union. employees given leaves of absence without pay shall receive dcredit toward annual salary increments on the schedules appropriate to their rank. The Board agrees to recommend to the Teachers' Retirment Board that the time spent on leave of absence pursuant to this section be granted as service credit for retirment purposes and that the employees receving such leave of absence be permitted to pay regular monthly contributions based upon their earnable salaries as members of the teaching staff for the period of such leave.

No more than 32 leaves of absence without pay shall be granted for each school year.

You don't have to call Cuomo on this one.

Gravatar Anon:

I'm confused. Based upon the information provided, does she only receive pension credit for 32 days or for the entire year? Did she pay her 3% contribution like we do for the first ten years? Please clarify this to me.

Gravatar Hellooooo! Every city union official is given the same option (police, fire, sanitation, mta, etc.) so why shouldn't she be treated equally. I think sometimes anger gets in the way of reasoning when we come up against UFT issues. True, we work 3 extra days and give 37.5 extra minutes a day
but we got the raises and 55/25 retirement option. We all know you "must give - to get."
I for one could never nor would I want her job. This Mayor and Chancellor are like a "tag team" against teachers...so was Guilani.
Rather than whine - we need to unite and work to get the changes we want.
