It is sad that too few of our UFT's leadership care that the "union fight" is a fight for our children and the future. All that we give up now will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for those who follow us to get back.

You forgot the dance class in the hallway. That must go over well with the classroom learning in the rooms attached to the hallway.
How come these non-educators see improvement when the national standards show no such improvement. Am I missing something here?
It's really all an outgrowth of the sharecropper society: few will have any stake or ownership in anything. Unions are a way to gain some control over one's working destiny. Why is education in such bad shape? Because those who would see the construction of the sharecropper society see real education as counter to their aim. Remember the old Syms ad? An educated consumer is our best customer. The Bushes and Murdochs of this world do not want educated citizens. They want a middle class so in debt that they have to volunteer for the army (and die for their adventurist policies). I believe the NYTimes just did a story on how the military lures kids in with promises of debt relief and money for college. Not enough people signing up? More credit cards for people who can't balance a checkbook. Reduce student loans. Reduce Pell grants. What kind of society is this going to be?
Isn't it amazing that for all the Daily News' anti-teacher, pro-BloomKlein editorials about what a great job the "small high school" idea is, 5 large schools, (Fort Hamilton, Curtis, Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, and Francis Lewis) are represented in a major 3-page article about prom costs in the NOW section? Makes you think large high schools can and do work if given the support, and resources and space to prosper.
These schools work IN SPITE of the fact that they are NOT given adequate resources, ESPECIALLY SPACE. They do use creative solutions to space problems whenever possible.
