"A socialist would stand up and demand an end to mayoral control, particularly in view of its ineffectiveness."

Right, because the system it replaced was so incredibly effective. Oh wait - the schools were significantly worse based on just about every single measure. But let's definitely go back to those days, anyway.

Gravatar The schools are significantly worse now than they were when this mayor arrived. I know this because rather than read his propaganda, I actually see what's going on every day in my 250% capacity school. It wasn't like this when he started. I view Mr. Bloomberg's achievements from a crumbling trailer with doors that neither close nor lock. On cold days, kids learn to really appreciate Mr. Bloomberg's control.

If you laud him when one grade's scores go up, and ignore when another's go down, he looks good. If you feel the highest class size in the state is a great achievement, he looks good. If you feel having the CFE award reduced by two-thirds is an achievement, he looks good. If you feel depriving ESL students of services in their neighborhoods is an achievement, he looks good.

And of course, if you don't believe in checks and balances, or corruption, and if you think making young children miss their bus service on the coldest days of the year is an achievement, he looks great.

As it happens, the public is beginning to wake up:

Gravatar Thanks for clearing that up. Now no one can call her a socialist, like that militant Kit Wainer.
So if Randi gave away so much of our union that would make her...best friends with Bloomberg and Klein!
It's easy to understand now. You must be a teacher.

Gravatar Ask the number of teachers who have left my old school in the past 3 years if the system is better or worse. Or the teacher arrested on the whim of the Leadership Academy principal? Or the overwhelming majorty teachers -- those that are still around who have not been driven from the system. Even ask the prinicpals. In the old system they stole pianos and made the front page of the Post. In this system they steal a billion and the press smiles.

Give me that good ole community control where at least you could go look the crooked politicians in the eye at a public meeting every month. And don't forget the role the UFT played at that level too. They totally controlled my district with the Dist Rep eventually becoming Supt and almost every CL becoming a principal - all Unity by the way. Unity NEVER complained all those years as they fed off the gravy train. And Howie Tames coming out of that machine and running DOE personnel. (At least you could pick up a phone and call Howie.)
