My school will be closing within a year or two--thanks to Randi and her moronic crew I will be stuck in ATR hell. Hey, I propose a better resolution--impeach Randi and her executive board.

You nailed it, as usual!

Gravatar Anybody find out if Richie Farkas had a problem with Randi after his piece on ATRs that got pulled from the UFT site? I queried my CL and she feigned ignorance of the whole matter. Does anyone have some info on whether Richie got sent to the woodshed?

Gravatar future ATR... how can you not know when your school is closing?

Gravatar Great piece. Maybe the new-New Action people will go back to the days of the old-New Action and once again give us hope for the future.

Gravatar Don't hold your breath waiting for them to give up their jobs and second pensions.

Gravatar I've said it before, and I'll say it again- most elementary and middle school teachers, who are less likely to have their schools closed, could care less about the ATR situation. The only reason anybody knows about them in my school is because we had one (and because I lecture about their plight in the teachers' room).

Gravatar Mister - You ask, "how can you not know when your school is closing?" The answer is very simple - you don't know until it's a done deal. One day there is an emergency meeting called by administration and the District Reps from the UFT and you are given the bad news. The union then holds several meetings with staff about the process, your so-called "rights," (or, actually, lack of rights), the support they will supposedly give you, and and plenty of other BS. By this time you should realize that the writing is on the wall and ATR limbo awaits you. The process is filtering down from the high school level; I was in an elementary school; middle schools in my former district were also beginning to be affected. I do believe that the UFT was a willing accomplice in my school's closing.

Gravatar 15 is correct about elementary teachers having no idea. I have also been talking it up for years and I still get, "What's an ATR?"

Until it hits someone they know, it's not an important issue. It also speaks to the lack of solidarity we have as teachers--not like 30 years ago at all.
