Gravatar The last line by the lady from Arizona is instructive. American schools are no longer equipped to deal with large numbers of students who are not literate in their own native languages. I have an 8th grader in a CTT class who has no education in his language, and is illiterate, of course, in English. Our principal wants him certified as retarded and placed in a 12-1 setting. I don't disagree that he needs a better setting, but placing him in the current definition of a MIS 1 is not going to meet his needs. Talking to him, he is a very thoughtful and verbally literate young man and I do not know what facilities we have to assist him and the thousands more the USA is getting everyday.

Gravatar "The whole southern concept of breakfast seems to depend a lot on grits, which don't much resemble food."

A pox on you!

And what in the name of all that's holy are you doing eating breakfast at a Waffle House? Ack!

Gravatar Do you know that grits and polenta are the same thing? Yum.

Did you know that at least in the state of Iowa, if one homeschools their child, there is the choice to administer a standardized test or submit a portfolio that shows "adequate progress". Who monitors this? What does "adequate progress mean?" Interesting that the standards are not the same for the schools.

Gravatar Thank you for those updates on Anna Nicole and Britney. These two (one dead, the other bald) are much more entertaining than Auntie Margaret, whose feeble attempt at punning ("Yes, Virginia, there is a Standards Clause") and her callous disregard for the struggles of English learners makes her eligible for the Left (as opposed to Right) Behind (as in Buttocks) Award.

Gravatar Iowa, I believe (someone will correct me if I'm wrong), gets away with this because Iowa thumbed its nose at federal monies that come with NCLB strings attached.

Gravatar I WISH we thumbed our noses at the federal monies. It's only the homeschoolers that get away with this. Believe me, the rest of us have all the NCLB hoopla to enjoy, complete with standarized tests that all must take, including our English language learners and Special Education students.

Gravatar Mea culpa! It was actually the fair state of Utah.

Gravatar It's true I don't understand the whole grits thing, or the polenta thing, but I've yet to set foot in a Waffle House, or a Huddle House. Yet someone must, because I see them everywhere.

Gravatar Grits aren't quite the same thing as polenta. Cornmeal mush is the same thing as polenta. Grits are made from hominy, corn treated with lye. This is why they are sometimes called hominy grits.

Grits with butter, salt, and pepper.
Cheese grits (seriously wonderful).
Grits and gravy (also seriously wonderful).

But the king of breakfast foods, after pie, that is, is biscuits and gravy.

Gravatar i am glad I found your blog. will come back for the resources, thanks
